I’d like to
have a quilt made. Where do I begin?

creating your own Legacy Quilt, please tour our Quilt Experience page.

Quilt Gallery for inspiration, and then complete
and submit an online Quilt Questionnaire. If you have a specific
quilt pattern you’d like used or have pictures of quilts you like, Legacy Quilts
can work with your ideas. We can offer suggestions based on your
fabrics and our expertise.
Once the possibilities have been narrowed, Legacy Quilts can offer a proposal of
‘virtually’ designed quilt ideas with pricing for your consideration and
approval.
<Top of Page>
How much do quilts cost? Where can I find pricing information?
There are a number of variables factored into the final price of a
custom/memory quilt. Legacy’s offerings are priced using a formula based on the
finished size and difficulty of the design, but might also include costs for
additional fabric/materials and number and size of images (if any).
General pricing for all of Legacy Quilts’ offerings can be found in our
Price Guide.
Once a design
is mutually agreed upon by the client and Legacy Quilts, an official Quote
Sheet/Contract is sent for signature. When endorsed, this price is binding through quilt
completion.

How long will it take to complete my quilt?
Allow at least 6-8 weeks for completion and
delivery after your contract is signed and the deposit is received.

Baby Quilts require at least 2-3 weeks for preparation and delivery.
Some
seasons of the year are very busy (Christmas and Spring, in particular.) Expect

Quilt Use
Can I have memory quilts made to match a specific decor ?
Yes, to a degree. The overall color scheme will, in large part, be determined
by the colors and types of fabrics you send. Your quilt can be designed to
emphasize a particular color scheme, or your fabrics can be supplemented with
Legacy Quilts’ ‘stash’ to achieve a desired effect.
By ‘virtually designing’ quilts using digital images of your exact fabrics*, you
will see a rendering of your quilt design and approve of the colors and overall
layout before signing the contract.
*Although
digital imaging provides a very realistic representation of the fabrics in a
virtual quilt design, digital renderings viewed on paper or through your monitor
may not exactly represent the true color, texture or pattern of actual fabrics.
<Top of Page>
Can
my quilt be used as a wallhanging?
Yes. By adding a
Hanging Sleeve
to the back of your quilt during construction, any size or type of quilt can be
utilized as a wallhanging.
<Top of Page>
Are quilts washable?
Yes. Bed quilts are designed to be washable in the delicate/cold cycle of your
washing machine and hung dry. Depending on the fabrics and techniques used,
some wallhangings are not washable. Be sure to ask Legacy Quilts about the washability
of the fabrics you’d like to use, or get tips in our
Quilt Care
section.

What
types of fabrics/clothes are best for making quilts?
It depends on how you plan to use your quilt. If it will receive moderate to
heavy use (like a bedspread or baby play quilt) it is important that the fabrics
can withstand regular use and laundering. If it will be used as a wallhanging
or only see occasional use and washing, there is more leeway in the fabrics you
can use. As general guidelines:
-
Cotton or
cotton blend fabrics work best, especially for quilts that will be used
heavily.
-
While they
add character to a quilt, shiny, stretchy, flimsy, sheer or exceptionally
‘worn’ fabrics are best suited for wallhangings or quilts that won’t see much
use and/or won’t be laundered.
-
All fabrics
have possibilities for quilting, and Legacy Quilts will work with whatever you
have to create a timeless memory quilt for you and your loved ones.
<Top of Page>
Are
there any items that cannot be used in a quilt?
Depending on how your quilt will be used, almost anything can be incorporated
into your quilt. Quilts made as wallhangings have more leeway in the types of
items that can be used and can more easily include non-fabric items (like small
stuffed animals or baby shoes), as they will not be laundered or used as
heavily.
<Top of Page>
Can
I make a quilt out of jeans/denim?
Yes! Jeans and denim make wonderful, long-wearing quilts. However, jeans
quilts are very heavy. If you prefer a light bedcover, this is probably not the
best option for you. Large jeans quilts can also be too heavy to fit in a
regular washing machine and will require special laundering/care.
<Top of Page>
How many pieces of clothing do I need for each
quilt?
As a general
rule, the number of clothing items needed will vary by the size of the quilt and
the size of the clothes. For example, it won’t take as many adult items to
make a quilt as it will take children’s or infant’s clothes to make a quilt of
the same size. For all quilts, we’ll discuss the vision you hold for your
finished quilt, as well as the types and amounts of fabrics/clothing you have
available. From this discussion, Legacy Quilts will guide you to send the
fabrics most likely to be designed into a successful memory quilt.
If you have a large number of t-shirts, utilize our
T-Shirt Quilt Size Guide to help plan
the perfect T-Shirt Quilt for you.
Please do not send items prior to consultation with Legacy Quilts.
<Top of Page>
Is
hand-quilting available?
Not at this time. All quilts are machine pieced and custom machine quilted. Upon special
request, quilts can be tied.
<Top of Page>
What
materials does Legacy Quilts supply?
All quilts are made with
high-quality threads and batting. Backing fabrics complement quilt
tops and enhance the overall feel of each quilt.
<Top of Page>
Will
I get my left-over materials back?
Yes, at your request, Legacy Quilts will be happy to return any unused
materials/scraps at the completion of the project. Or, you might consider
having additional quilts, wallhangings,

Special
Types of Quilts (Photo, T-Shirt, KinderQuilts)
How many pictures can I put on a Photo Quilt?
This depends on the quilt size and design, as well as the size of the
photos. Discuss your needs with Legacy Quilts when you
Contact Us.
<Top of Page>
Can
I use images from slides or negatives?
Yes. Legacy Quilts can transfer the images from your slides or negatives
into
a usable digital format.
<Top of Page>
Can
I use old photos?
Yes, in some cases. Any photo having a clear image will work. In all cases,
blurry or out of focus photos are not recommended. If your original photographs
are very old, cracked, stained or damaged they will not produce a clear scanned
image, and they also may not withstand handling. In these cases, you should
seek professional photographic assistance to restore and/or scan them
properly before submission to Legacy Quilts.
<Top of Page>
Do
photos all have to be the same size?
No, photo sizes can
vary. Photos can be enlarged or reduced to fit your quilt, or depending on the
quilt design, random sizes of photos may be appropriate. Using photos larger
than 8x10 is not recommended. Photo manipulation and editing beyond basic
transfer will incur additional charges.
<Top of Page>
Should I send non-fabric items (photos/artwork/documents, memorabilia)
to you directly, or can I send them digitally?
To ensure the highest quality results, Legacy Quilts recommends that you send
your original photos, artwork, and documents to us for scanning and transfer to
fabric.
-
Send items
in an unbendable envelope packed carefully with your other fabrics. You may
want to enclose the envelope/photos in a sealed ZipLoc-type bag for added security
from moisture.
-
To ease
communications, label each item with your name and a title (ie.John's b-day
with cake). Make a note in pencil on the
back, or add a sticky-note if you don’t want to write directly on the item.
-
All items
will be returned in the condition in which they were received.
If you’d
prefer to send digital files or photo CDs …
-
Save each
scanned photo at the largest physical size that will be used in your quilt
(5”x 7” to be safe, or 8”x10” max.) using a resolution of at least 300 dpi
(dots per inch), especially if the image may be
resized. Save as TIFF or JPEG files.
-
Label each
file with a descriptive text name (i.e. “the cabin in fall”, “grandma with
cake”, or “bringing baby home”). If emailing, please include your full name
in the body of the email.
-
Sending
large image files via email is difficult unless you have a high-speed
connection. In most cases, sending images on a CD with quilt materials
or via regular mail is a
more viable option.
-
CDs and
disks will NOT be returned unless specifically requested at the time the
contract is signed.
*Please do not send any items prior
to consultation with Legacy Quilts.
<Top of Page>
Should
clothing or t-shirts be cut before they are sent to Legacy Quilts?
No. To achieve maximum use of every fabric item, clothing
(especially t-shirts)
should not be cut before they are shipped. If t-shirts are pre-cut, additional
‘repair’ fees may apply.
See our
T-Shirt Quilt Size Guide for additional information and guides.
<Top of Page>
Can other materials like sports jerseys, sweatshirts or windbreakers be used in
T-Shirt Quilts?
Yes. If they have printed areas, they will be handled in the same manner as a
regular t-shirts, utilizing the primary printed area of each garment as a
‘block’ in your quilt.
<Top of Page>
What kinds of 'art' works best in a KinderQuilt?
Any medium is acceptable, as long as it has clear colors and lines. Scribbles,
lines, shapes and bright colors produce the best quilted results.
-
The size of
each item is limited to legal size (8 1/2” x 14”). If your item is larger
but has a central image that will fit completely or in part on a 8 ½” x 14”
area, it can still be used successfully .
-
Artwork that
will smudge or smear in transit (like chalk or pastels) should be packaged
carefully or have a clear
spray-on fixative applied before shipping. Ask your local art or craft store for
help.
<Top of Page>
Will
my photos or artwork be harmed in any way?
No. The items are scanned and used digitally. Your original photos, artwork,
and other memorabilia are unharmed and will be returned to you in the condition
in which they were received.
